Best Odds Guaranteed Limits
A punter taking 4/1 on a horse that drifts to 6/1 at the off expects the larger payout when the bet lands. Under standard best odds guaranteed terms, the bookmaker settles the wager at the higher Starting Price rather than the earlier price taken. Yet that concession only pays out when the price actually drifts out, and the extra money is heavily restricted by strict qualifying windows, bet-type exclusions, opt-in requirements, and hard payout caps.

Knowing whether the concession applies to a specific slip requires looking at the exact house rules before staking.
Drift mechanics and race qualification
The mechanic behind the promise is straightforward. Sky Bet states in its customer support terms that Best Odds Guaranteed ensures that if the official Starting Price is bigger than the price taken by the bettor, the bet settles at the bigger price.
The scope of this offer is geographically restricted. Sky Bet limits its guarantee to UK and Irish horse racing only, unless the firm explicitly states otherwise on a market.
William Hill applies a similar boundary. Its guarantee applies to win or each-way singles and multiples placed on the win market for UK and Irish horse racing. The concession does not operate across every international track or every non-standard racing format.
Time windows: why morning placement dictates settlement
Timing is where most assumptions fail. A price taken the evening before a meeting does not qualify.
Sky Bet allows the guarantee only on wagers placed on the day of the race between 9:00 am and the scheduled start time. Any wager struck earlier misses the concession entirely.
William Hill operates on a slightly different morning schedule. Under William Hill rules, the offer opens at 8:00 am on race day and runs until the off. Bets entered before 08:00 settle at the exact fixed price taken, or at Starting Price if the customer took no early price.
William Hill also adds a manual step. Customers must actively select the "Best Odds Guaranteed – Opt In" feature on their accounts to activate the pricing mechanism. Placing an eligible bet at 8:30 am without completing that opt-in means the settlement reverts to the original price taken.
Excluded stakes, multiples, and promotional offers
Even inside the correct time window, several betting categories sit outside the rules across both bookmakers:
- Ante-post markets are excluded by both Sky Bet and William Hill.
- Tote and pari-mutuel pool wagers are excluded under William Hill rules.
- Price Boost Specials, Price Boost Multiples, and general promotional offer races are excluded by Sky Bet.
- Free bets and special promotional tokens do not receive the uplift on Sky Bet slips.
If a punter applies an enhanced odds boost or stakes a promotional token, Sky Bet rules state the guarantee ceases to apply. The payout is determined solely by the terms of the specific promotion rather than the underlying Starting Price drift.
Payout ceilings and daily cash caps
The monetary return on drifting odds is not unlimited. Bookmakers protect against large liabilities on heavily drifted runners by setting strict financial thresholds.
Sky Bet caps the maximum payout increase from Best Odds Guaranteed at £50,000 per bet or per race for horse racing. An outsider drifting from 10/1 to 33/1 on a large stake cannot generate an additional payout beyond that £50,000 limit.
William Hill enforces a lower ceiling structured around the clock. The operator sets a maximum daily cap of £25,000, on the additional benefit a single customer can receive from the guarantee per calendar day.
Because bookmakers write their own rules, there is no single, industry-wide standard governing these limits. Neither regulatory authorities nor independent audits publish a verified, cross-market average for the actual financial uplift these concessions generate across all UK punters.
A bettor evaluating a morning price must verify five specific factors before staking: the operator's active morning time window, whether the race is in the UK or Ireland, whether an opt-in button is required, whether the stake involves promotional credits, and the ceiling cap on additional winnings.
